Adenoids, also known as the pharyngeal tonsils, are a patch of soft tissue located in the upper part of the throat, behind the nose and above the roof of the mouth. They are part of the lymphatic system and, like tonsils, play a role in the immune system by helping to fight off infections.
Adenoids are present at birth and tend to be largest in children, gradually decreasing in size as a person grows older. They are positioned near the opening of the Eustachian tubes, which are responsible for draining fluid from the middle ear into the back of the throat.
